Art show benefit in Pomona for autism

POMONA- During the Second Saturday Art Walk there will be a benefit art show for Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome in Pomona’s Art Colony. All the artwork in the show has been donated to help raise money and awareness for the Autism Society of America.

This exhibition is organized by Alex Brown and Natalie Vincent. This is Brown’s third consecutive show in Pomona’s Arts Colony and the second by both Brown and Vincent for fundraising purposes (the first show in October was for cervical cancer).

The art venue is of the Art Rave variety: where enterprising artists, without the backing of an established gallery, submit proposals to acquire the temporary use of an empty storefront and fashion it into a gallery for a specific event. Given the worthiness of Alex Brown’s vision, the Tessier family (as they have with several promising artists) granted Brown the use of one of their vacant storefronts, thus becoming a curatorial participant in the Pomona’s Art Walk.

An art student at Cal Poly, Alex has become aware of how curating your own art show in a real world environment is often the experience missing from a good art education, “As an artist, you usually only get opinions about your work exclusively, but as a curator, you hear about all the work in the show: presentation; craft; how the show is hung; every aspect of the show itself.” Alex gets to share these lessons with his fellow students, who primarily make up the bulk of Brown’s group shows.

But if that wasn’t enough, Brown appreciates the opportunity of using an art venue as an outreach to the community. With his partner, Natalie Vincent, they have managed to solicit donations and sponsorship for their fundraising events, with another planned art fundraiser to benefit the dA Center for the Arts in February.
