The artists explore together issues of power within the Catholic
Church, as well as within the arts community and contemporary
art business. There is sharp social commentary, with Thomas
Stubbs taking on the rise of religious fundamentalism within
the U.S. Working with vivid colors and precise books. Manny
LeGaspe applies traditional Catholic iconography to christ-like
figures placed on found objects. While the artists' cover a
range of content and commentary, most do so in the context of
established art historical traditions--realism, illusionism,
narration, and figurative painting. Coming from common academic
training and tackling the same issues, the variety of approaches
brings the show together as a continuing exploration rather
than definite statement.
