Right around the corner from the dA Center for the Arts in Pomona
is Bunny Gunner Gallery, an intimate space that is hard-pressed
to contain the exuberance of Godfrey4Way-2008, a one-man show
of new work by the well-respected L.A. artist, Richard Godfrey.
Bunny Gunner describes is as "a one man bar-room brawl
of aesthetic delights." And although the work explodes
with energy, it is also complex and thoughful. Patrons familiar
with Godfrey's past explorations of color and form will be surprised
by his new paintings. A distant descendent of abstract expressionism,
the compositions flow so easily they almost appear to be the
product of a natural process and the constrained, minimalist
palette reveals a deep meditative approach hard to reconcile
with a guy who looks as if he has more in common with Yosemitte
Sam than he does with Mark Rothko.
