Art now for
the future

Artists, downtown business people and others gathered
at Thomas Plaza on Saturday afternoon for the unveiling
of a plaque for the mural titled "Envisioning the
Future."
The mural is one example of various art pieces produced
as part of the Envisioning the Future Project, an effort
that kicked off in September 2003 that drew more than
80 artists and resulted in the creation of art pieces
in different media, said Cheryl Bookout, a Pomona resident
who was part of the project.
The mural, on the west side of the Union Block building
in the Pomona Arts Colony, was one of those works. Some
of the artists who created the mural returned this summer
to clean the art piece, add some missing details and give
it a protective coating, a project paid for with financial
assistance of the city's Board of Parking Place Commissioners.
With the help of the Downtown Pomona Owners Association
a plaque was purchased with the names of the artists who
worked on the mural, said Bookout, who headed the mural's
restoration effort.
